What is an interior designer?

If you like color and fabric, rearranging your room, or drawing furniture or designs, this could be a very good job for you. Interior designers decorate spaces in homes, offices, and other buildings. They make sure that the rooms look nice and work well for the people who live and work in them. Interior designers might also work in buildings where they create a temporary design to make a conference or a meeting more pleasant and productive.

Preparing for the job

High school students can learn about family and consumer sciences, art, and computers to prepare for college classes that lead to a career in interior design. You can become a junior designer, drafter, or retail staff member after taking two-years of classes at a community college. To become a registered interior designer, you have to take four years of college. Classes there will teach you about supervising and scheduling contractors and installers, making contracts, selecting and purchasing materials, and planning rooms using a computer. Once you have finished your classes, you have to pass an exam to become registered. If you would like to teach interior design at a college or work in facilities management, you will also have to go to graduate school.

The future

There will be many job openings for junior interior designers. Very talented people will be more likely to get the best jobs at a senior level. The ability to make customers happy is also a very important skill for success in this field.
