How does the program work?
The Kids & Family & Consumer Sciences program includes specializations in the human sciences and provides college students and professionals with kits of a wide variety of hands-on activities and demonstrations that are safe and age-appropriate. Existing activities will be collected in a central resource. Each activity will conclude with a short description of the applicable career, including how specialized knowledge is used in professional practice. Examples of activities:
Clothing and textiles – Experiment with clothing stains, e.g., comparing use of alcohol and soap/water to remove ballpoint pen ink on clothing. Develop tips for caring for clothing. Nutrition – Compare nutritive value of snacks. Prepare nutritious snacks. Health and wellness - Examine food safety practices. Learn about exercise requirements for health. Consumer education – Compare prices of the same product in newspaper. Make budget for allowance. Evaluate advertising for questionable information and deceptive practices. Interior design – Develop plan for convenient storage in bedroom. Child development – Develop baby-sitting tips. Make plan for reading to a 4-year old or conducting an activity. Family relationships – Practice listening and responding effectively to develop good relationships. Relationships – Discuss ways of stopping bullying. Explore cultural differences and making friends.Kappa Omicron Nu will post program and resource kits for the Kids & Family & Consumer Sciences program on its Web site.
