Message from the
Kappa Omicron Nu Board of Directors

This message reports on the outcomes of the 2005 Conclave Assembly of Delegates Meeting.

The chapter delegates passed resolutions regarding programming for undergraduate research and ethics. See the "Chapters" link on the Home page, www.kon.org, for the text of the resolutions. Each resolution suggests some program activities.

We are pleased to announce the new Student Board Members:

Tracey L. Bridges - University of North Carolina at Greensboro
Deidra M. Cody - Berea College
Anita G. Coleman - Northwest Missouri State University

The Delegate Forum identified the following values: leadership, research, scholarship, professionalism, ethics, individuality, community, diversity, teamwork & collaboration, service, pride in KON, empowerment, open communication, respect, trust, commitment, life-long learning, self-development, and passion. The highest priority needs include:

  • #1 - Information on Majors and Careers - presentation formats, job opportunities, professional empowerment

  • #2 - Collaborating & Networking - between disciplines on campus and across campuses

  • #3 - Committed & Empowered Leaders - profile of leadership characteristics, information about motivation, activities to understand self, leadership workshops, online resources for increasing chapter involvement, activities, fundraising

  • #4 - Board Members as chapter mentors/contact persons - assign regionally to support and provide national information
and Support System for Chapters in Changing Environment - separated departments, distance learning, non-traditional learning environment

Follow-up on these priorities has already begun:

  • Plans are being developed to provide a Career Center with links to all the specialized professional association career information Web sites.

  • Human Sciences has been defined on the "About Us" link on the KON Web site. See information below.

  • The online resources have been summarized at www.kon.org/leadership/lead_devel.html.

  • Plans are being developed to increase electronic communication with presidents and advisers. We need your help! At the end of the 2004-05 academic year, only 20 chapters submitted officer lists.

  • The January KON Board Meeting will involve further planning to meet the needs identified by the Delegate Forum.

The Program Priorities for 2005-2007:

  • Undergraduate Research

  • A Matter of Ethics

  • Required Program Themes - choose at least one

    • Professionalism & Career Networking

    • Writing for Success

    • Leadership 105: Making Change on Campus (or other focus on leadership)

    • Developing a Research Project (or other focus on research)

    • Kids & Careers

    • A Matter of Ethics

New Guidelines: The Chapter Benchmarks recognize the elements that contribute to achieving chapter excellence. See www.kon.org/chapter_files/benchmarks.htm

The National Office takes pride in immediate response, so call us or send an e-mail.

Our best wishes for a good year.
